Chihuahua proof fenced yards are essential unless alternative arrangements are put in place to assure the puppy or dog's safety when it is necessary for them to go outdoors. Otherwise, they should be taken outside with a properly fitted harness and leash.  Never allow a Chihuahua of any age outdoors in an unrestricted area without being properly leashed. Due to their diminutive size, Chihuahuas have an exceptionally high sense of self-preservation, and can easily become frightened. Despite their tiny size, they can also run really fast. Are you positive a Chihuahua is the breed for you? Are you familiar with the less desirable traits of the Chihuahua?   

 

Yes, they're going to bark...and they require a tremendous amount of socialization. They're tiny, and they can easily be injured. 

 

Have you researched the Chihuahua breed, or at least some in depth research on proper care and rearing of a puppy?  Do you have a definite plan of action for housebreaking a puppy? Caring for a puppy is no different than rearing young children -- they get into everything! Make life safer for the puppy and your household by "puppy proofing"  your home ahead of time.  To a puppy, the world is brand new and fascinating! They're seeing it all for the very first time and absolutely everything must be thoroughly investigated. Puppies do most of their investigating with their mouths -- "Look at this! What is it? Something to eat? Something to play with?" Murphy's Law says that a puppy will be most attracted to the things they should least have -- electrical cords, the fringe on your expensive oriental rug, your brand new running shoes, etc.  Preventing destructive and dangerous chewing is easier than trying to correct the puppy every second. Look around your home. What objects could be put up out of the way of a curious puppy? Bitter Apple spray can be applied to furniture legs, woodwork and other immovable items. Are there rooms your puppy should be restricted from entering until he's better trained and more reliable? Install a baby gate or keep the doors to those rooms closed. 

 

 

 

 

 

A ring worthy Chihuahua's conformation ideally is consistent with the breed standard. Many Chihuahua puppies offered as companions typically have some sort of negligible imperfection, as compared to the AKC standard for a show quality Chihuahua, which precludes their participation in the show ring. Generally, when coming from a reputable breeder, the disparities between a show ring worthy Chihuahua, who has met all the AKC standard requirements for the ring, and those they might offer as a companion Chihuahua, are not readily detected apart from the trained eye of a show breeder, or a qualified judge. Some Chihuahuas simply don't care for the show ring period.  Show dog or pet, a Chihuahua's capacity to bring your family years of joy, and life long devotion, and Chihuahuas were bred to be companion animals centuries before dog shows and kennel clubs ever existed.
