I happened to be there when they were conceived.
I was there when their Mother listened to instinct and prepared her bed.
I was there at THREE AM when their Mother with instinct, labor, and love brought them forth.
I was there when they drew their first breath and squealed in protest at being disturbed.
I wiped them dry, and watched their Mother greet them with the loving caresses that bonded them together.
I watched their Mother care for them, gently pushing them into place so they could nurse.
I have even been there every two hours, when more milk was needed than their Mother could possibly supply.
I was there to lose more sleep than I’ll ever find.
I have sterilized their bottles, mixed their “baby” formula, and felt the love when their expressions told of contentment as their tummies filled.
I watched them wiggle, squirm and slowly learn to crawl.
I was there to watch them each day as their eyes and ears slowly opened to their new world.
I was there to watch their legs and bodies twitch as they slept, strengthening their muscles for the upcoming day when they would walk.
I watched as them took their first awkward steps, and then tried their luck with funny “Bunny Rabbit Hops”.
I fed them, their first “baby food” and laughed as it was all over their faces, and clumsy little feet, and their Mother and I washed them clean.
I was there to help their Mother keep them clean.
I was there to pick up papers, to wash and disinfect their comfy bed, floor, and dishes.
I was there to watch their eyelids twitch as they slept and dreamed.
I was there as they begged and toyed with Mom for more milk and was told “It’s time you learned to eat”.
I was there to watch them run and sniff, stumble, fall and tumble exploring with their siblings.
I was there when they learned to crouch and bounce, barking and wagging their tail at me as if to say “World look out I have arrived!”
I was there to bathe and groom them, and trim their nails.
I was there when they evolved from being the funny awkward puppy, and became elegant, handsome, and delightful young beauties.
I was there most importantly to teach them confidence, trust, and love.
I was there to see and be proud of all they have become.
I was there when you chose one of them as yours, but you did not know that I was carefully choosing you for them.
I was there to watch and wipe the tears from my eyes and cheeks as they left for their big new world and their new family.
I was there to remember that as with children, we must give them two things – Love and Wings ….
I pray that you will continue to provide for, care for, and with patience, gently teach them and above all “love them”.
I trust you with their care, for up until now - - - I Happened to Be There
